물가 안정/ 미국의 연준(연방준비위원회) 중앙은행이 가장 두려워하는 것?

우리나라로 치면 한국은행에 해당하는 연준이 가장 두려워하는것은 무엇일까요?

멀정했던 화폐가 무용지물이 될 수 있을까하는 생각이 드실텐데요, 독일의 사례입니다.

The money they issued becomes useless.

You wonder if the distant currency can be useless, but there is the case in Germany.

← 1923년 초, 독일에서 빵 한 덩어리 가격은 250마르크였어요. 그런데 물가가 치솟아 연말엔 2000억마르크를 내야 빵 한 덩어리를 살 수 있었어요. 인플레이션이 심해져 하이퍼- 인플레이션이 온 건데요. 이럴 경우 물건 사러 가는 사이에 가격이 올라 못 사고 헛걸음하거나, 화장실 휴지가 비싸서 지폐로 뒷처리를 한다는 우스갯소리도 나오곤 하죠

In this case, there's a joke that the price goes up and you can't buy and walk in vain, or that toilet paper is expensive, so you clean up with bills.


이런 상황에서는 화폐에 대한 '신뢰'가 무너져버려요. 아무도 화폐를 보유하지 않고, 어떤 물건이든 사려 하겠죠. 그럼 물건값은 점점 더 오르고, 화폐의 가치는 점점 더 떨어지는 악순환이 벌어져요 그래서 중앙은행들의 제 1 목표는 '물가 안정'이에요. 우리나라의 한국은행도 소비자물가 상승률을 2% 아래로 유지하는 것을 목표로 삼고 있어요 물가가 높지 않을 땐 경기 부양을 위해 완화적인 정책(금리 인하)을 펼 수도 있지만, 인플레이션이 우려되는 상황에서는 물가를 잡는 게 최우선 목표 돼요. 경기가 위축되는 한이 있어도 말이죠.


In this situation, the "trust" in money collapses. No one has money, and they're going to buy anything. Then there's a vicious cycle where things go up and the value of money goes down. So the number one goal for central banks is to stabilize prices. The Bank of Korea also aims to keep consumer prices below 2%. When prices are not high, we can implement easing policies to stimulate the economy, but when we're concerned about inflation, our top priority is to keep prices under control. Even if the economy shrinks.

그러니 연준이 제일 중요하게 여기는 물가가 잡히지 않는다면, 긴축 정책은 점점 더 강해질 수밖에 없습니다. 반대로 물가가 안정된다면, 연준이 비교적 덜 빡빡하게(?) 경기까지 고려한 통화정책을 펼 수 있겠죠!

So if the Fed's most important thing is that prices don't get caught, tightening is going to get stronger. On the other hand, if prices are stabilized, the Fed could have a relatively less tight monetary policy!
